What Contributes to Headaches?

There are plenty of reasons that you might suffer from a headache or migraine, such as

  • Certain medications
  • Congenital issues
  • Ear infections
  • Improper ergonomics
  • Lack of balance
  • Past trauma
  • Poor nutrition
  • Poor posture
  • Poor sleeping posture
  • Sinus issues
  • Stress
  • Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, tobacco)
  • Whiplash
Headache Triggers

Many headaches can be triggered by what we eat or drink. If your get headaches are becoming more frequent, become mindful of some of these factors:

Foods – Certain foods such as fermented vegetables, processed meats, aged cheeses and soy sauce contain substances that can produce headaches.

Alcohol – Can activate an inflammatory response. Red wine often contains sulfites and histamines that can produce headaches too.

Gluten – Headaches may be a symptom of celiac disease. About 20% of us have a negative response to this protein found in wheat, rye and barley.

Dehydration – Drink plenty of water. Headaches can be your body’s way of telling you that you’re not drinking enough water.

Caffeine – This addictive substance is found in coffee, tea, chocolate and is added to carbonated beverages. Withdrawal can often cause headaches.

In today’s high reliance on technology, a common contributor of headaches is ‘teck-neck.’

A condition that results from the hunchback slouch many individuals employ when they’re using their electronic devices.

How We'll Assist You

AT SYDNEY ALLIED HEALTH CLINIC

Because headaches can indicate that something is wrong, it’s always advisable to have your headache evaluated. The first step is to have a full assessment with our chiropractor, Dr George Prorellis to understand the type of headache you are experiencing. He’ll perform a range of testing to ensure your spine is aligned as it should be. If not, it may be interfering with your nervous system and resulting in the pain you’re feeling.

Any joints will be realigned. If muscles are affected, they’ll be released and stretched out. Weak muscles can be strengthened with an exercise prescription. Dr Prorellis will further advise you on ergonomics and how to take better care of yourself and prevent future issues.

Whether you suffer from stress induced tension headaches, or whether your chronic migraine is hormonally and chemically based we will provide you with a proper care plan based on your needs. You also will be given some advice on lifestyle and stress management.
